emphasis on the scary bit

so perhaps this adrenaline search of the BEST horror movie has yet to end. the beginning of Saw was just the tip of the iceberg of what's to come. since we were still in school, Chibs & i were on a constant search of spine-tingling, gut-wrenching and scream-worthy movies to watch. trust me we've seen a lot with many if not all ending in disappointments. i've divided horror into 2; first would be the paranormal supernatural horror and the next would be gore & graphic violence. The jump start of Saw created somewhat a standard for such gore-violent movies with the brilliant concept and scenarios put into play. after Saw no other gore movies can ever take it's place. some may not agree because yes, there are gorier and maybe much more violent scenes taken place in other B-grade movies. however i prefer it better to watch people who deserves to die rather than the innocent ones. if you like it the other way around, WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU? unlike other movies, the victim in Saw actually DESERVES to die with probably that exception where theevilbitchtookoverandstartkillingwithouttherules. making these people die gives an added satisfaction in the movie because it actually makes you cheer for them to die just so you get to see how the contraption actually works (or maybe its just me). so yes, if you were suggesting Hostel, The Hills Have Eyes, Wrong Turn.. bla bla bla... been there done THAT.
next would be the paranormal element in horror. as a kid i remembered renting the VHS with Chibs and watching The Exorcist in the evening with us giggling almost abnormally at the screen. i enjoyed the scene with her crawling down the stairs. absolutely brills! after that we realized that no standard of horror can actually satisfy us especially after finding out that The Exorcist was rated to be the BEST horror move EVER. really? pfffft!
the discovery of Shutter was probably the best damn thing anyone could hope for. and mind you i meant the THAI version. the realization that a lower budget ASIAN horror could do wonders as compared to hollywood bullshit, made us despise american-made horror movies. even Phobia 2 was somewhat creatively scarier even though on most parts it was funny. no offense to american-horror maniacs out there who wets their bed at night after watching Paranormal Activity or Amityville, the stereotype of characters in these movies are eye-rolling worthy and down-right predictable.
here's a comparison between ASIAN characters & AMERICAN characters:

ASIANS:
when they hear weird sounds or start seeing weird things, the first thing they do is GET THE FUCK OUT OF THERE.

AMERICANS:
"hello. anybody there? hello?! stop it, it's not a joke alright..."
*silence*
.
.
.
.
.
.
"AHHHHHHHH!!!!"
.
.
.
.
.
*dies*

it is no wonder there are more ASIANS living on this planet. our survival skills are brilliant.

based on my personal observation, Hollywood movies when it comes to paranormal horrors suck camel balls because it is not their culture to have such things. their belief systems are more logical rather than supernatural. thus why perhaps i find Asian horrors more appealing. their cultures and beliefs are closer to home with the perception that maybe they can happen to me.

so in conclusion are there any reaaaaaaaaally good horror movies left for me to devour without hysterically laughing due to the stupidity & fakeness of the characters? please drop me a line if you can think of a few.

little amie

a good friend once said that the key to happiness is by drowning in tears in the shower and then listening to a good song after. i never did realized the rationale of it all until one day it struck me as to why years ago i wrote in countless essays why my main character would always cry in the rain - to hide the pain as the rain mixes with the tears sending your pain to the ground. there's some symbolic shit right there.
this past couple of weeks has been different and exciting at the same time. hanging out with old beau's i used to discard with the compulsive ideology that i really do deserve better; i now find myself not falling but appreciating them a little but more. a new routine was all i need. from morning breakfasts to movie nights, i am not complaining one bit. i'll always discover new things from the almost-forgotten.
so far i am feeling quite awesome. minus the cough and slight sniffles.

on another note:
i've watched New Moon THREE times in less than 24 hours.
call me crazy but i DID NOT watch it for Edward Cullen because in all honesty he's so fugly in the second movie that it makes me doubt humanity's sanity. Jacob Black was so beautiful and perfect that i shivered so many times just by LOOKING at him. uhhhh-uhhhh-ahhhhhh!!! crying and squealing never felt so good during the 2 hours of the movie.
i am so in love with that 16 year old wolf!!!!!!

nobody should take this seriously

today felt like a wasted morning. like i could have spent it better in bed, all cuddled up having awesome dreams. i'm so used to a few naps during the day that even my night time sleep is considered one. can you believe that last night, before proper bedtime, i actually went to sleep for a few hours; waking up only at 10?! crazy balls! then because of my super speed internet, i went on downloading 2 movies; Paranormal Activity & Whatever Works. had a whole argument on Paranormal Activity in the day time on how it's probably the next Blair Witch & how america can only succeed in hand-cam horrors as compared to big budgeted ones. so i managed to download the movie in 35 minutes! YES!!!! super clear dvd quality shit in less than an hour... in freaking BANGSAR! J came over to watch it with me because he apparently has a copy of it in his HD but he misplaced his peen so was too chicken to watch -_-"
i ended up looking bored as hell and laughed at inappropriate places while he was probably talking most of the time; maybe trying to distract himself from being too scared (this has yet to be proven since he's good at denying) - read: misplaced peen.
i think the movie was creative and the storyline and twist was cool if not original. instead of tackling ghosts like typical horror movies, this one is kinda like a demon-esque thing. all in all i was not scared because i think Phobia 2 gave me more shivers & actually made me close my eyes. Paranormal was very nyeh.
still i would think Chiky will scream with Roe; Miriam and me will go "eleh, tu je?!"

i remembered the days i would go to Guardian and buy bags full of the chocolate frogs not just for the cool cards of the wizards but because the chocolate was fucking sedap (obviously imported). it weird to watch these actors grow not just in front of you in the huge screen but together with you.

An autistic romance. and romance being the key word here. i'm shoving aside the conventional way of reviewing romance movies here for a minute because there is nothing conventional about this movie. Sure Josh Hartnett stars here opposite Radha Mitchell; 2 very good-looking actors (sorry, the superficial part of me was shining too brightly....) I admit, the reason i watched this movie was because of oh-dirty-sexy-voiced Josh Hartnett, but i think it's one of those movies which you might need to have a specific mind-set before actually deciding to watch. Don't expect soft-core sex scenes, love-dovey behavior and jiwang-karat lines which could make you roll your eyes till it disconnects from your sockets. i had no expectations. nothing and my eyes were constantly glued to the dusty screen.
2 individuals with autistic differences suffering with Asperger's Syndrome, Donald (Hartnett) who has a superhuman abilty with numbers ("I'm late, which is ironic, because I started out 9 hours and 23 minutes early") and Isabelle (Mitchell) who takes things literally and hates the sound of metal banging each other. Prior to meeting Isabelle, Donald works as a taxi driver and leads an autism group. When Isabelle joins the group she turned Donald's life around fusing together her choas and his flaws and creating a new person in Donald. The chaos they live within society makes more sense when they are together; from gawking people to their hopes and dreams (Isabelle wants to paint a room with morbidity and scary eyes).
Never will you see a character so cleverly portrayed by Josh Hartnett. plus you get to see him in a vinyl whale mascott suit. which still equals to sexy in my books. i'll rate the movie a 3.5/5 in storyline but 4.5/5 for different. it's not everyday you get a movie touching topics such as these...
"i don't know what to say" - and with that he caught her heart.
